Engaging with Northern communities
We understand that collaboration with communities and local governments is imperative throughout this process and engagement means two-way information sharing. Community involvement is also critical to informing a final closure and reclamation plan. This includes supporting Indigenous Knowledge sharing through community-led studies.
Communities and Indigenous governments in the Sahtú, Gwich’in, Inuvialuit, Dehcho, Yellowknife Dene and Métis regions will all play an important role in providing feedback and collaborating on mitigation measures to ensure broader closure planning acknowledges and addresses community concerns. Key themes we are hearing:
Environmental Monitoring
The Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) is part of Imperial's Norman Wells environmental monitoring programs to assess and report on water quality and fish health in the region. The AEMP was developed through working groups that included the Sahtu Land and Water Board, community leadership and community members.
The AEMP has three main parts:
- Water quality sampling
- Small- bodied fish study
- Large- bodied fish study
During the transition from production to closure, the program will continue. View the materials from recent sessions.
We welcome and need continued participation from community for AEMP success in 2026 onward. Learn more about the AEMP program in your community.
Fuel and electrical supply in Norman Wells
There are no near-term changes to wholesale fuel supply arrangements for the Town of Norman Wells. Imperial continues to maintain and operate fuels distribution per existing supply agreements and is evaluating long-term plans related to wholesale fuel supply service. Imperial remains committed to enabling safe and reliable supply to the community.
Electrical power supply and power transition
Imperial’s Norman Wells Operations currently generates electricity, using produced gas, which is then supplied to Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) and distributed to the Norman Wells distribution network.
Following end of production in Q3 2026, Imperial will no longer supply power generation services to NTPC. Imperial is cooperating with the NTPC on permanent transition of power generation for the community. Plans are in place for NPTC transition to diesel-generated power.
