Economic development

Creating long-term economic and social benefits for our communities.

We fuel the Canadian economy. Over the past 135+ years, we’ve provided well-paying jobs to Canadians, opportunities for independent businesses and taxes to governments.

Supply chain management

Local vendors supply our goods and services. That’s a big part of our business strategy.

In 2018, we paid $4.7 billion for goods and services to more than 4,488 suppliers. Eighty-eight percent of our suppliers were from Canada and made up 95 percent of our total spend.

Partnering with Indigenous business suppliers

We want the Indigenous communities to benefit economically from development on their land. Indigenous suppliers provide us with many goods and services that are competitive and meet our high project standards.

In 2018, we spent $250 million with Indigenous suppliers and have spent $2.6 billion over the past 10 years.

In 2018, more than $5.6 billion in taxes and royalties were borne and collected that in turn helps fund school systems, roads, hospitals, social programs and much more.

Workforce development

More than 5,600 people make energy happen here at Imperial. That’s why we invest in their careers, their growth and their families.
