Imperial’s support expands All In for Youth tutoring program to include science

  • Imperial, United Way of Calgary and Area and YMCA Calgary join forces to expand the All In for Youth Tutoring Table program to include science.
  • The expansion is made possible by Imperial’s $400,000 donation, announced in 2024, aiming to inspire youth toward STEM careers and strengthen Calgary’s future workforce.
  • Since 2013, more than 6,500 students have benefited from the Tutoring Table program, offered in schools, with free one-on-one tutoring available in-person and online.

United Way of Calgary and Area (United Way) has expanded its signature math tutoring program to include science. Starting this fall, the All In for Youth Tutoring Table will include science tutoring, thanks to Imperial’s $400,000 contribution. This funding will provide Calgary high school students access to free one-to-one science tutoring, complementing the existing math support.

“Imperial is excited to see the official expansion of the Tutoring Table program into science, supported by our investment,” says Rebecca Holding, commercial manager and chair of Imperial’s United Way campaign. “We believe that by supporting programming that inspires and prepares youth to pursue STEM careers, we are opening the door to the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.”

About the Tutoring Table program

United Way first launched the Tutoring Table Program in 2013, in partnership with YMCA Calgary, as part of its commitment to helping Calgary’s children and youth thrive. Offered through United Way’s All In for Youth initiative, the Tutoring Table program provides hands-on academic support, helping students succeed in the classroom and develop a lifelong passion for learning. YMCA volunteers serve as tutors, mentors and role models, often sharing career advice, personal experience and knowledge.

“STEM education is vital to building a skilled workforce,” says Monique Blough, Director, Children & Youth Strategies at United Way. “Adding science to the Tutoring Table program means we’ll be able to reach even more youth, breaking down barriers that might prevent students from pursuing careers in STEM fields, and giving them the confidence they need to succeed.”

In the 2024-25 school year, more than 850 students accessed tutoring support. Since its inception, more than 6,500 students have been helped.

Tutoring sessions are held at all YMCA Calgary locations, Greater Forest Lawn library, Crescent Heights High School, Village Square Leisure Centre, and Vivo Community Hub, as well as online via Zoom. Students can access the program by visiting www.ymcacalgary.org/tutoring. Individuals interested in volunteering as tutors can email volunteer@ymcacalgary.org.
