At Imperial’s Finch Terminal, the work never stops. It’s a 24/7 operation and the highest-throughput terminal in ExxonMobil’s North American network — where precision, speed and reliability are critical.
But for Process Lead Corey Wheaton and his team, impact doesn’t end when they leave the site.
It extends into the community.
With a team of eight operators and maintenance staff — plus support from office colleagues — finding time to volunteer isn’t always easy. So they’ve made it simple: keep it flexible and do it together.
They carve out a few hours at a time to support local food banks, donate plasma through Canadian Blood Services, organize Earth Day cleanups and assemble snack packs onsite.
Moments that matter
One recent volunteer experience left a lasting impression. Last year, the team led a drive to collect prom attire for students in a local neighbourhood, helping more youth take part in a milestone moment.
“It’s really become a team-driven effort,” says Corey. “People bring forward ideas and take the lead.”
Those experiences carry through to the workplace. Operating a major facility in a large city comes with responsibility — not just for safety and performance, but for community connection.
“Volunteering shows we care about more than just operations,” he says. “It helps build trust and understanding.”
It also brings broader perspectives into decision-making, helping the team think more thoughtfully about their impact.

Inspiring the next generation
In recent years, Corey has focused on STEM-related volunteering, including work with the Ontario Science Centre and STEM Camp.
Growing up in Nova Scotia, he was the first in his family to attend university — an opportunity shaped by early exposure to science programs. “Those experiences made a difference for me,” he says. “If I can help create that for someone else, that’s meaningful.”
This Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 19 – 25), Corey offers some simple advice for those considering ways to give back: start small.
“Even an hour makes a difference,” he says. “Once you start, people find what they’re passionate about.”
Looking ahead, the goal is clear: keep the momentum going.
“The team has really embraced this,” he says. “What they’ve built together — that’s what I’m most proud of.”
A company-wide commitment from Imperial
Imperial provides matching company funds for employee volunteer hours ($25/hour) and charitable cash donations (1:1) to a combined maximum of $500 per employee, per year. In 2025, Imperial employees volunteered more than 12,000 hours in their communities for causes close to their hearts.
