Honoured to lead at Imperial

John Whelan

Chairman, President and CEO

Imperial has been a pioneering force in Canada’s energy industry for 145 years. Today I am honoured to join that legacy as chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Supported by an amazing team of more than 5,000, who demonstrate passion, integrity and innovation every day, I am committed to protecting Imperial’s proud legacy and shaping its future.

My roots in Canada and connections to Imperial

Growing up in Newfoundland, I have great memories of watching Hockey Night in Canada, with its Esso commercials and awarding of the Three Stars, originally named for Imperial’s Three Star gasoline. It wasn’t until I began my pursuit of engineering though that I learned about the bigger story of Imperial. A story of innovation, resilience and excellence. From finding vast reserves - including the famous Leduc No. 1, which set the stage to make Canada a major oil producing nation - to developing groundbreaking technologies, Imperial’s efforts have always set new standards in the field.

I started my career with Mobil Oil Canada in 1988 as an operations engineer in Drayton Valley, Alberta. Our operations were close to Imperial’s and I had the opportunity to learn about the company professionally and even personally, as Imperial and Mobil went to battle in the local recreational hockey league. I couldn’t have been more pleased when the two companies came together in 1999. Knowing the company’s approach to resource development and its high standards towards safety, operations integrity and capital discipline – I knew this was a company where I could continue to build a career.

Building prosperity and energy security across Canada

More than 35 years after I began my career, I am excited to return in this new capacity. Now more than ever, I believe in the importance of Imperial to the country. We provide reliable and affordable energy and essential products that Canadians need, and we do it locally, responsibly and sustainably – continually looking for ways to reduce the emissions intensity of our own operations and for our customers as well. The company is an essential and strong supporter of the Canadian economy:

  • employing thousands of hardworking Canadians; and
  • supporting thousands of Canadian businesses – many of which are Indigenous-owned.

Opportunities ahead

As I look to the future, I am energized by Imperial’s potential and future opportunities. The company has:

  • high-quality, long-life, low-decline upstream assets;
  • advantaged downstream and chemicals assets;
  • low-cost, high-return growth opportunities;
  • a drive to increase shareholder value, supported by disciplined financial management;
  • a value-driven focus on sustainability, underpinned by a century of technology/innovation leadership;
  • and most importantly, we have the best people in the business who have world-class capabilities.

Building on our company’s strong past, I am excited to leverage the company’s strengths and competitive advantages to build an even-brighter future. I look forward to sharing more here about this exciting journey.
