Imperial now producing renewable diesel at Strathcona refinery

Imperial has completed construction and is now producing renewable diesel at Strathcona refinery. At full capacity, it is expected to be the largest renewable diesel facility in Canada. The project was first announced in 2021 and has the capacity to produce up to 20,000 barrels a day of renewable diesel.

Imperial’s renewable diesel is similar to traditional diesel, can be used with no engine modifications and is well-suited for Canada’s cold weather conditions. The product is made by combining hydrogen, bio-feedstocks such as canola oil sourced from Canadian suppliers and proprietary technology.

Strathcona renewable diesel is a significant investment by Imperial to bring lower-emission fuels to market, making them accessible to Canada’s hard-to-decarbonize industries. The facility is now supplying customers in western Canada and Imperial operations in northern Alberta.

The project benefited from government policy, including incentives from the Governments of Alberta, British Columbia and Strathcona County.
