About Imperial in Sarnia

Imperial's Sarnia operation is the most integrated fuels, chemicals manufacturing and petroleum research facility in Canada. The refinery can process about 120,000 barrels of crude oil daily, which is processed into a wide range of products for heat and transportation.

Imperial has proudly operated in the Sarnia area for more than 125 years. The site’s past success and current strength stem from the skills, commitment and passion of the site’s 700-person workforce.

Operations

  • Refinery

    The site processes mainly Canadian crude oil to produce a range of petroleum products including gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel, home heating fuel and marine fuel.

  • Chemical plant

    The Sarnia chemical plant produces a wide range of products, such as polyethylene, solvents, higher olefins and aromatics, which are used to manufacture many everyday items, including recycling bins, hard hats, toys and more. 
  • Research centre

    Imperial’s research centre in Sarnia is focused on supporting customers, developing and improving petroleum products and providing new technologies to improve environmental performance.

    Safety and emergency preparedness

    Should an incident occur at the site, well-defined plans and emergency response capabilities are in place, which include access to specialized equipment and trained personnel. Our emergency teams also conduct regular drills and simulations to ensure we are always ready to respond.

    Site alarm testing

    Our emergency warning system is a series of air horn alarms to alert our personnel of potential emergencies at the site. Alarms are tested every Monday at 12:30 p.m.
