Imperial has more than 5,500 staff across Canada, needless to say we are not all the same – and that’s a good thing. Imperial’s focus on diversity and inclusion helps create a workplace where people’s unique contributions and perspectives are respected and valued. These different ideas and viewpoints ultimately strengthen the company and help it grow and innovate.
One of the ways Imperial maintains a supportive work environment is though a range of development and networking programs including, but not limited to, employee-led diversity networks for women, Indigenous, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons.
Imperial's PRIDE employee resource group supports LGBT staff and allies, and encourages awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion issues around gender identity, expression and sexual orientation in the workplace. The group provides mentoring, professional development, networking events and activities for members, allies and the entire staff population. This will be Imperial’s third year participating in Calgary’s Pride Parade and the second year as a platinum level sponsor of the event.

Because of the support I’ve received from Imperial’s PRIDE employee resource group – as well as our Indigenous Network – I’ve realized how important it is to bring my whole, two-spirited self to work”, said Imperial employee, Mick Elliott. “My reconciled, honest professional-self creates a healthier, happier husband for my family which has a tangible benefit for my work family and the company. When we are allowed to exist as our true selves, we are able to grow and develop in unprecedented ways; in my opinion, this is why our Networks are fundamental to a company’s diversity and inclusion efforts.”
The group celebrated its fifth anniversary on June 29, fittingly during LGBT Pride Month in Canada. Membership, including allies, continues to grow. The network is affiliated with the ExxonMobil PRIDE employee resource group, which has over 1,000 members globally.
In addition to supporting the PRIDE employee resource group, Imperial is a corporate partner with Pride at Work Canada, a non-profit organization focused on promoting LGBT inclusion in the workplace.
