Kearl will provide economic and social benefits locally, provincially, and across Canada for decades to come. It will create wealth and enhance the standard of living for Albertans and Canadians through royalties and taxes, and help to fund infrastructure, social programs, and services.
Imperial Oil, together with Frontier College, recently provided summer
literacy camps for the children of Fort Chipewyan. Camp counsellors
were hired from within the community and Imperial's Calgary-based
employees donated over 850 books to the local community school.
Kearl’s 2005 regulatory application included a socioeconomic impact assessment that detailed specific investment and federal, provincial and municipal tax benefits. Other benefits include:
A peak construction workforce estimated at 1,700 people. About 10,000 person years of direct employment and 21,000 person years of indirect employment will be generated during construction of the facility.
About 1,100 to 1,300 permanent jobs, when all three mine trains are in operation. Kearl will be a camp-based operation with its workforce on a fly-in/fly-out rotational schedule. About 2,700 person years of employment will be provided each year.
Opportunities for local and Aboriginal businesses, both during construction and on a sustained basis, over Kearl’s operating life. We are committed to using, on a competitive basis, qualified local and regional contractors and suppliers that meet our high safety and environmental performance standards.
Personal income taxes and induced revenue collected by provincial and federal governments.
Direct community participation and investment in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
