During construction, most of the Kearl workforce will be contractors. Once Kearl is in operation, the workforce will consist of permanent Imperial employees and long-term contractors, not a temporary or transient workforce.
Employee and Contractor Work Camp
Kearl will be run as a camp-based project, with a rotational shift schedule. Construction contractors will be housed in a construction camp. Operations employees and long-term contractors will stay in an operations residence for their entire shift. This will allow Imperial to maintain a safe, healthy, productive and efficient work environment with minimal impact on the infrastructure of the City of Fort McMurray. We expect to fly our construction and operations workforce to the site, likely from Edmonton, Alberta. We plan to use a joint industry airstrip located close to the Kearl lease.
The camp-based operations will provide additional benefits such as reducing travel risk to personnel while also reducing commuting time, reducing potential highway traffic, and attracting workers from a broader population base who are interested in this type of work and lifestyle.
Kearl will provide significant job and business opportunities.
Medical Centre
Imperial has worked closely with the Northern Lights Health Region to plan an on-site health care centre for Kearl workers to deal with routine medical conditions. We intend to equip the centre to provide stabilization of serious injuries, remote online consultation with a doctor, first aid, and dispensing of common prescription medications.
Imperial expects that staff at the on-site medical centre will be able to manage relatively minor health and medical issues without drawing on the services of the Northern Lights Health Region.
