Graduate Employment Opportunity - Seismic Field Operations Safety Coordinator

Primary Assignment:
As a seismic safety specialist within Imperial’s Geoscience Technology group, based in Calgary, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance of all Imperial’s field seismic programs to corporate and government regulatory safety, health and environment (SHE) standards in Canada. You will work with both geophysical acquisition and SHE staff as well as seismic field contractors and subcontractors in providing SHE expertise in the pre-planning, field oversight, incident reporting and investigation of SHE issues. You will help train Geoscience’s seismic field quality control contractors in corporate SHE systems and oversee their activities in the field by direct field visits.  You will also coordinate office safety initiatives and reporting across the Geoscience department. You will liaise with affiliate geophysical operations field SHE staff on incident reporting and SHE process audits.  The position involves understanding of seismic field operations, SHE processes and Canadian regulatory environment, safety, health and environment standards for both land and marine seismic programs.
 
Examples of Specific Job Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities will include the following:
  • Assist in risk assessments of safety, health and environment (SHE) issues in pre-planning seismic field operations – land and marine
  • Field seismic site visits to assess compliance to SHE regulations throughout the duration of field seismic operations
  • Assist in SHE incident reporting and investigation of field seismic or office-based incidents and develop and implement mitigation plans
  • Provide SHE input at both pre-startup and post-project meetings with seismic contractors to implement and upgrade SHE learnings
  • Ensure Geoscience department alignment with corporate Operations Integrity Management Systems (OIMS) and SHE programs – both field operations and office based (e.g. ergonomics)
  • Assist Geoscience department’s Fieldtrip Coordinator in SHE issues related to geological field trips
  • Testing, training and certification of seismic contractors in SHE field operations
  • Liaise with corporate seismic SHE peers globally on implementing best practices within Canadian seismic operations
  • Liaise with industry groups and regulators (CAGC, CSEG, CAPP Geophysical) on seismic operational SHE practices and guidelines

Qualifications Desired:
 
Academic:    A technical college diploma in geoscience or geotechnical support
 
Other:
An ideal candidate may have a subset of the following skills / interests or have a desire to acquire or further develop in these areas:
  • A strong background in field seismic operations – especially land based programs
  • Understanding of government seismic field standards and regulations on safety, health and environmental compliance (e.g. Alberta Sustainable Resources Department, Oil and Gas Commission)
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation
  • Knowledge of Canadian Association of Geophysical Contractors safety guidelines
  • Knowledge of Occupational, Health & Safety regulations and incident classification systems
  • Familiarity with behaviour-based safety programs
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis methodology for incident investigation
  • Understanding of office-based ergonomic issues
  • Certification in Seismic Field Operations Safety
  • Exposure to field supervision of seismic and other geophysical operations
  • Competent computer PC skills
  • Good interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Prior petroleum industry experience is an asset
