Esso's heavy duty engine oils meet Caterpillar's new ECF-1 specification

Toronto, ON, June 1, 2003
Imperial Oil announced today that three of its diesel engine oils - Esso XD-3 Extra 15W-40, Mobil Delvac 1300 Super, and Delvac 1 -- all meet Caterpillar's ECF-1 (Engine Crankcase Fluid) specification, a new standard developed to ensure optimum life and performance of Caterpillar engines.

Created for Caterpillar engines that meet stringent 2002 emission regulations and earlier models, lubricants meeting ECF-1 specifications provide excellent soot dispersion, wear control and piston deposit control.

"These products are very effective at dealing with soot, wear, and corrosion in both on and off-road Caterpillar engines," said Clint Smith, Imperial Oil's national Marketing Technical Services Automotive advisor. "We expect our products to exceed current industry standards and are proud to have ECF-1 supported.  This is another benchmark highlighting our advanced technology and the performance benefits of our lubricants."

To meet the new ECF-1 specification, lubricants must have API CI-4 or CH-4 certification, and pass a Caterpillar IP SCOTE test (ASTM D6681).  Lubricants that have a sulfated ash content less than or equal to 1.30 weight per cent as measured by ASTM D0874 need to pass the Caterpillar 1P test once, while those with a sulfated ash content above 1.30 weight percent and below 1.50 weight percent must pass the Caterpillar 1P SCOTE test twice.  Lubricants with a sulfated ash level above 1.50 weight percent are not eligible for ECF-1 certification.
